Serenity mental health Most of the time, we ignore the needs of our mind, body, and soul, but it is quite detrimental because we need to regularly check on ourselves, take good care of our health to function effectively. Imagine moving with rocket speed tires but operating on a non-lubricated, never serviced twenty-year-old engine? — this is just an example, yet it sounds horrible already. Well, this is what we do. We’re even used to working on autopilot, ignoring the signs our bodies give us. It’s imperative to know when to take a break and pay attention to you!
Why is everyone is talking about mental health? It’s quite simple. The Medilexicon’s Medical dictionary defines Mental health as: “Emotional, behavioral, and social maturity or normality; the absence of a mental or behavioral disorder; a state of psychological well-being in which one has achieved a satisfactory integration of one’s instinctual drives acceptable to both oneself and one’s social milieu; an appropriate balance of love, work, and leisure pursuits.”
According to the European Journal of Public Health, Mental disorders rank among the disorders which contribute enormous suffering for affected persons and their families, high burden of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and high economic and societal direct and indirect costs. People with severe mental illness have increased the risk of premature mortality and thus a shorter life expectancy.
Mental disorders must have started with simple mental concerns that were ignored until they became severe. Mental health has been linked to mental illnesses in all the wrong ways. This is because most people run away from anything that has ‘Mental’ attached to it. The truth is, we all need to be wary of our mental health status because everyone has a mental concern from time to time but if this concern expands or deepens in such a way that a person cannot go on with normal day to day activities, it becomes a mental illness.
There are several symptoms to know if someone has a mental illness. Here are a few:
1.Having extreme mood changes or swings
2. Being overwhelmed by sadness and grief
3. Total or significant withdrawal from friends & family
4. Excessive worry over everything
5. Constant tiredness & Lack of interest in activities
6. Detachment from reality and life
7. Getting persistent Suicidal thoughts
8. Getting very swift to irritation or anger
9. Alcohol or drug abuse
10. Inability to deal with simple problems
11. Having trouble understanding situations/people
12. Misinterpretation of situations
You don’t need to have all the symptoms to have a mental illness, you may have most of them most of the time though, to be concerned. If you’re already worried, you should know the types of mental illnesses there are and the treatments available for them.
I’m going to categorize the problems based on mood and anxiety.
Anxiety disorders include:
1. Panic disorder
2. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
3. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
4. Chronic phobias
Mood disorders include:
1. Major depression
2. Bipolar disorder
4. Persistent depressive disorder
Here are a few treatment options for Mental illnesses mentioned above:
1. Self Help — this includes lifestyle change, such as avoiding alcohol and drugs, sleeping more, changing your eating pattern, etc.
2. Medication — After your doctor prescribed drugs to use to deal with the illness, you are sure medication will improve symptoms.
3. Psychotherapy — Involves speaking to a specialist. It’s a psychological approach to treating it. There’s Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Exposure therapy and dialectical behavior.
Mental Health is being shoved to the side for physical fitness of recent but what people do not know is that if the overall mental health of a person is fine (if a person is mentally healthy), it makes it easier to be physically fit. Also, did you know that what we eat plays a great role in our mental health? Now you’d know.
According to the International Journal of Psychiatry, few people are aware of the connection between nutrition and depression while they easily understand the connection between nutritional deficiencies and physical illness and the American Society for Nutrition Journals states that proper nutrition is a key aspect in maintaining a healthy lifestyle as diet directly affects both physical and mental health.
Psychiatrist Drew Ramsey, MD, an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University said traditionally we haven’t been trained to ask about food and nutrition but diet is the most powerful intervention we have and that by helping people shape their diets, we can improve their mental health and decrease the or risk of psychiatric disorders.
“A very large body of evidence now exists that suggests the diet is as important to mental health as it is to physical health,” says Felice Jacka, president of the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research. “A healthy diet is protective, and an unhealthy diet is a risk factor for depression and anxiety.”
SAGE Journal says that over the past ten years, there has been an increase in studies investigating the relationships between dietary patterns and mental states and both studies have shown that the more one eats a Western or highly processed diet, the more one is at risk for developing psychiatric symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Conversely, the more one eats a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, high in healthy fats, nuts, and fish, and low in processed food (a Mediterranean-style diet), the more one is protected from developing a mental disorder.
It’s real. What you take in can affect your mental health centers positively or negatively. I listed types of mental health problems above under mood and anxiety. Well, research done so far connecting food intake to mental health has focused on only depression and anxiety. It shows how much our nutrition plays a significant role in us being mentally fit. However, experts say that diet shouldn’t be used as a replacement for medication and treatment, should just be improved so it will work together with major treatments.
Experts, Psychiatrists, and Mental health specialists have done research and highlighted some nutrients highly needed for mental boost:
1. Iron — Too little iron in the blood has been linked to depression
2. Zinc — Controls the body’s response to stress. Low levels of Zinc in the body also causes depression
3. Vitamin B12 — Those with low B12 levels have more brain inflammation and higher rates of dementia and depression
4. Omega-3s — Omega-3s are healthy fatty acids that improve thinking, memory and probably, mood.
Also, fermented food, like, Kimchi and yogurt, help reduce anxiety and stress and depression. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants that increase blood flow to the brain, aiding mood and memory.
Mental health should sit atop the list of our priorities when it comes to our overall wellbeing. So, watch your mood, how you think, what you think of. If you need to see a specialist because you’re depressed or you had a panic attack, go ahead. Talk to someone, a professional. You can even start by speaking out to family and friends but what’s necessary is that you don’t keep mum. Mental health should always be your number one priority.
